SUMMARY:Fiesta Mexicana Family Concert
DESCRIPTION:Fiesta Mexicana is an interactive concert for kids and their parents based on our Parents Choice Award-winning album of the same name. The program includes songs\, storytelling and interactive games between the songs that are delivered in English and Spanish. \nThe group embarks on a journey through Mexican music and the magic world that surrounds it. Then they learn songs about different animals that inhabit the Mexican ecosystem\, including the acamaya (a crawfish)\, the crocodile\, the legendary mermaid\, a mouse\, a buzzard\, a duck\, and even a cat! Kids will clap Mexican rhythms and learn the difference between a slow and a fast tempo with the help of Doña Sabina\, a 100-year-old special guest. First and foremost\, everyone in the audience will learn how fun it is to play and dance Mexican music. \nFree and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Chicago Immigrant Stories: Pilsen
DESCRIPTION:Sones de Mexico Ensemble’s Juan Dies\, Victor Pichardo\, Eric Hines and Erendira Izguerra join forces with Orbert Davis and the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic to explore the Mexican experience in Chicago through a jazz perspective at the National Museum of Mexican Art February 21. \nCJP’s artistry of cross-genre collaborations will meld with the musical culture of some of Chicago’s immigrant communities\, in a series of small group “Innovation Lab” workshop performances that will culminate in a large orchestral event at Millennium Park in Summer 2019. The collaborations will be led by Orbert Davis working with select musicians across the city\, and supported by CJP orchestra musicians including Leandro Lopez Varady (pianist from Argentina)\, Zara Zaharieva (violinist from Bulgaria)\, and Suzanne Osman (oudist and percussionist from Lebanon). \nJoin us for this one-night-only event to witness jazz\, classical\, and diverse music of the Mexican ‘son’ tradition meld and connect in new and unexpected ways. The musicians will share their stories and their music to create a shared experience of what it means to be a Chicagoan and an American. \nThe National Museum of Mexican Art will be available for self-guided tours prior to the performance. \nFree and open to the public.

SUMMARY:¡Que Viva México! Film with live music by Sones de México
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Mexican Consulate in Detroit in celebration of Mexican Independence Day. \nDirector Sergei Eisenstein’s restored silent film masterpiece “¡Que Viva México!” with live musical accompaniment by Sones de México Ensemble. \nOn a 1927 visit to the Soviet Union to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Russian Revolution\, Diego Rivera met Sergei Eisenstein\, a giant of early film making and the director of the groundbreaking silent film “The Battleship Potemkin”. Rivera was impressed by Eisenstein’s work and told him so. In turn\, Eisenstein was fascinated by Rivera’s accounts of Mexican artistic heritage\, describing the wonders of ancient Aztec and Mayan art and architecture. \nIn 1930\, Eisenstein traveled to Mexico to begin work on a comprehensive\, 4-part story of Mexican history through the lens of both the Russian & Mexican revolutions. Eisenstein shot over 30 hours of film\, but never completed the movie. \nVarious short films were made using the existing footage\, but a serious attempt at a restoration honoring Eisenstein’s intent didn’t arrive until 1979 when director Grigori Alexandrov\, another Russian director who accompanied Eisenstein on the shoot\, released “¡Que Viva México!” \nSones de México Ensemble will perform a live musical score of traditional Mexican music and new theme music composed by ensemble member Zacbé Pichardo to accompany a rare screening of this silent film. Projected English subtitles will be translated into Spanish from the original Russian.
