SUMMARY:¡Que Viva México! Film with live music by Sones de México
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Mexican Consulate in Detroit in celebration of Mexican Independence Day. \nDirector Sergei Eisenstein’s restored silent film masterpiece “¡Que Viva México!” with live musical accompaniment by Sones de México Ensemble. \nOn a 1927 visit to the Soviet Union to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Russian Revolution\, Diego Rivera met Sergei Eisenstein\, a giant of early film making and the director of the groundbreaking silent film “The Battleship Potemkin”. Rivera was impressed by Eisenstein’s work and told him so. In turn\, Eisenstein was fascinated by Rivera’s accounts of Mexican artistic heritage\, describing the wonders of ancient Aztec and Mayan art and architecture. \nIn 1930\, Eisenstein traveled to Mexico to begin work on a comprehensive\, 4-part story of Mexican history through the lens of both the Russian & Mexican revolutions. Eisenstein shot over 30 hours of film\, but never completed the movie. \nVarious short films were made using the existing footage\, but a serious attempt at a restoration honoring Eisenstein’s intent didn’t arrive until 1979 when director Grigori Alexandrov\, another Russian director who accompanied Eisenstein on the shoot\, released “¡Que Viva México!” \nSones de México Ensemble will perform a live musical score of traditional Mexican music and new theme music composed by ensemble member Zacbé Pichardo to accompany a rare screening of this silent film. Projected English subtitles will be translated into Spanish from the original Russian.

DESCRIPTION:Sones de México Ensemble celebrates Mexican Independence Day with a concert at the famous Diego Rivera Court at the Detroit Institute of the Arts. \nThe Detroit Industry fresco cycle was conceived by Mexican muralist Diego Rivera as a tribute to the city’s manufacturing base and labor force of the 1930s. Rivera completed the twenty-seven panel work in eleven months\, from April 1932 to March 1933. It is considered the finest example of Mexican mural art in the United States\, and the artist thought it the best work of his career. \n“Beyond the Music: A Musical Geography of Mexico” is a guided tour through Mexico’s folk music regions by our lively and informative multimedia performance presentation. DESCRIPTION:A rare total solar eclipse will pass directly over Carbondale\, IL on the afternoon of August 21\, so Sones de Mexico Ensemble is heading to the path of totality to present Beyond the Music: A Musical Geography of Mexico  outdoors at Lemus Turley Park\, 109 N Glenview in Carbondale. \nThe total eclipse occurs at exactly 1:21PM. There will be music both before and after\, starting with Zenen Zeferino from Veracruz\, Mexico with the Encuentro de Jaraneros of the Midwest. After a break to view the eclipse\, Sones de México will perform beginning at 2PM. \nIn addition to Beyond the Music\, Sones de México will perform rarely heard selections from their 2013 concept album 13 B’ak’tun\, a song cycle that revolved around the turning of the Mayan calendar. \nCan’t make it to Carbondale? SUMMARY:Navy Pier Group Quinceañera Concert
DESCRIPTION:Navy Pier is celebrating the quinceañeras of young ladies throughout the Chicagoland area with free professional group photos on the 15th of July. Navy Pier has teamed up with the National Museum of Mexican Art to host a photo shoot for 15-year-old birthday girls on the base of the Pier’s Wave Wall staircase on the South Dock against the backdrop of the Centennial Wheel. Local young ladies are invited to gather at the Pier in their finest quinceañera dresses for a “class photo” along the lakefront with others celebrating the special milestone. \nSones de México Ensemble will celebrate along with them by performing a concert at 2:30 (after the photo shoot) on the brand new Polk Bros. Performance Lawn Stage at the entrance to the pier. \nA popular Latin American tradition\, quinceañera is a celebration of a girl’s coming of age\, marking the transition from childhood to young adulthood in the Latin American culture.
