This captivating series explores the presence of African culture in Mexico\, spotlighting the profound influence of Black individuals on the country’s vibrant history and current culture with the aim of finding common ground and promote kinship between Chicago’s Black and Mexican communities. \nThe series transcends the stage to honor the Afro-Mexican population\, a facet often relegated to the sidelines in conversations about Mexico’s ethnic diversity. \nAfrican-influenced styles of Mexican music to be explored include son jarocho\, mariachi\, Chilenas\, and son de artesa. \nWe’re pleased to announce that the 79th Street Renaissance Festival has invited us back to present an abbreviated version of this program. The Festival is located at the intersection of 79th Street and Racine Avenue and presented by the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation. DESCRIPTION:Learn everything you ever wanted to know about Mexican folk music but were afraid to ask. Juan Dies is a 2019 USA Fellow\, a folklorist\, ethnomusicologist\, and co-founder/producer of the two-time GRAMMY™ Award Nominated group Sones de Mexico Ensemble\, now on its 25th Season. His visit to the Chicano Resource Center at the East Los Angeles Library is part of a lecture tour sponsored in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. \nUsing a map and sound recordings Juan will take you on a quick tour of Mexico’s diverse traditional music and dance styles\, explain their history and geography\, and point out what to listen for.
