DESCRIPTION:Sones de México Ensemble travels to southern Illinois to present our Fiesta Mexicana family concert and a series of workshop activities at Art in the Park. \n1:30 PM – Workshops \nAztec Ceremonial La Danza de Sol\nAfromexican Mimetic Dance/Zapateado\nDanza de Viejitos Mask-Mak \n2:30 PM – Fiesta Mexicana \nFiesta Mexicana is a 45-minute interactive concert for kids and their parents based on our Parent’s Choice Award-winning album “Fiesta Mexicana: Mexican Songs & Stories for Niños & Niñas and their Papás & Mamás.” The program includes songs\, storytelling\, and interactive games delivered in English and Spanish. \nEmbark on a journey through Mexican music and the magic world that surrounds it. Children will learn about the four sacred elements of nature for the Aztecs: Earth\, Wind\, Fire\, and Water. Then they learn songs about different animals that inhabit the Mexican ecosystem\, including the acamaya (a crawfish)\, the crocodile\, the legendary mermaid\, a mouse\, a buzzard\, a duck\, and even a cat! Clap to Mexican rhythms and learn the difference between a slow and a fast tempo with the help of Doña Sabina\, our 100-year-old special guest. \nFirst and foremost\, everyone in the audience will learn how fun it is to play and dance Mexican music. \nOther activities include the SIU Ballet Folklorico “Dos Fronteras” and Latin Dance with the Salsa Night Dancers. \nArt in the Park is free and open to the public. \nThe celebration is presented by SI CABE: Southern Illinois Culture and Arts in Bilingual Education and Salsa Dance Night and is generously supported by an Illinois Arts Council Agency Artstour & Live Music grant\, the Illinois Humanities Foreground Rural Initiative\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, Alto Vineyards\, El Paisano Restaurant\, with help from numerous community (CMS Beta Club) and SIU student volunteers.

DESCRIPTION:Sones de México Ensemble will provide the live music for this dance spectacular. \nBallet Folklorico Estrella del Mar (BFEDM) will be celebrating its fourth anniversary. Please join them as they showcase the Mexican culture through dance with special live musical performances. \nBFEDM is a Mexican Folkloric dance group from St. Mary Star of the Sea School. Founded in August 2015\, BFEDM consists of over 60 schoolchildren. In addition to encouraging discipline\, teamwork\, attention to detail\, and an appreciation for the arts\, the children learn about their culture through music and dance. They have performed in various festivals and cultural events for the school and their community. They have recently been invited to perform at the Archdiocese of Chicago Annual Celebrating Catholic Education Breakfast and the National Catholic Educational Association Convention.

The show will feature 45 company dancers and a special guest appearance by the GRAMMY-nominated Sones de Mexico Ensemble. Our goal is to exhibit our rich and diverse Mexican Heritage through dances from all around Mexico.

DESCRIPTION:Sones de México Ensemble joins the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago for a special evening celebrating Mexican culture\, music and dance. \nThe Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago was founded in 1982 by José Luis and Matie Ovalle\, its present artistic directors and choreographers. As Chicago’s oldest Mexican dance institution\, MFDC has received countless recognition and awards\, has performed for three presidents and represented Mexico in the 1994 USA World Cup opening ceremony. \nThe company has collaborated with Sones de México many times over the years\, including the Ensemble’s historic 20th Anniversary Concert in Chicago’s Millennium Park.
