DESCRIPTION:Sones de México Ensemble\, a two-time Grammy Award-nominated Mexican folk music non-profit organization founded in 1994 and promoter of deep dives into Mexican culture\, presents “The Black Music of Mexico” series. The first mariachis date back to the 1840s\, originating in rural areas of Jalisco\, Nayarit\, Colima\, and Michoacán in Western Mexico. Their repertoire included sones and danceable jarabes. In the 1930s\, mariachi music became urbanized and spread nationally through radio and globally during the golden age of Mexican cinema. This turned it into the principal vehicle for accompanying solo ranchera music singers\, such as Pedro Infante\, Jorge Negrete\, Lola Beltrán\, Antonio Aguilar\, Cuco Sánchez\, Lucha Villa\, Vicente Fernández\, and Juan Gabriel. Among the most distinguished mariachis are the Cuarteto Coculense\, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán\, and Mariachi Los Camperos. Let’s celebrate this magnificent Mexican tradition by singing some of the immortal hits of mariachi from yesterday and today. \nTo participate in “¡Canta! Radio Recuerdos\,” eligible seniors can register for free by visiting: https://ageguide.org/spanish-language-sing-alongs-for…/. For musicians and artists\, Africa’s ancestral heart beats strongly in the soundscape of Mexico\, but sadly\, Afromexican presence is often underrepresented in conversations on Mexican history and culture. We invite our community to join us as we gaze through the lens of Mexican regional music to admire and celebrate Blackness in all aspects of Mexican society. Music is a truthful expression of the human experience\, and we hope this series will inspire unity and love throughout our diverse Chicago neighborhoods.” – Eric Hines \nNo registration necessary. Join us on Zoom at the following link: https://mex.how/afromex* \n*currently this link connects to a video of part one of this discussion. On February 28\, it will connect you to the Zoom session. It will also stream live on YouTube.com/sonesdemexico. \nFunding for the Black Music of Mexico series is provided in part by the Exellerator Fund at Latinos Progresando and the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation (GAGDC); the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation; the Chicago Cultural Treasures at the Illinois Facilities Fund; the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs; and the Illinois Arts Council Agency.
