DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Mexican Art presents “Beyond the Music: A Musical Geography of Mexico” streamed live on the NMMA’s Facebook & YouTube pages.\n\nIn the midst of travel bans and sheltering in place\, why not end 2020 with A VIRTUAL MUSICAL TRIP TO MEXICO\, expertly guided by the GRAMMY™ nominated Sones de Mexico Ensemble\, produced by the band during the pandemic.\n\nWith the help of a map and a collection of dozens of authentic musical instruments\, the band will take you on a satisfying\, one-hour journey through Mexico’s cultural regions performing an Aztec dance\, son huasteco\, música norteña\, son abajeño\, son planeco\, son de mariachi\, son de tarima\, son istmeño\, son de marimba\, son jarocho\, and other unique traditional music styles featuring instruments\, dance\, repertoire and techniques rarely seen outside their local regions. Learn the instruments\, repertoire and techniques which lead to these unique styles.\n\nAbout Juan\n\nJuan Díes is an active musician and co-founder of Sones de México Ensemble\, a two-time GRAMMY® nominated performing arts organization established in 1994 to perform\, record\, teach and promote Mexico’s rich heritage of folk music and dance traditions. He holds an M.A. in folklore/ethnomusicology from Indiana University and has devoted his professional life to presenting\, researching\, advocating\, teaching\, producing\, and performing traditional music and culture.
