Radio Recuerdos\,” this free membership club offers a unique opportunity for seniors over 60 to connect\, reminisce\, and enjoy the joy of singing from the comfort of their home. \nLed by the singer and guitarist Juan Díes\, co-founder of the two-time Grammy-nominated Sones de México Ensemble\, and hosted by program assistant Alfredo Hernández\, “¡Canta! Radio Recuerdos” invites eligible seniors to join in on the musical festivities via Zoom. This captivating series explores the presence of African culture in Mexico\, spotlighting the profound influence of Black individuals on the country’s vibrant history and current culture with the aim of finding common ground and promote kinship between Chicago’s Black and Mexican communities. \nThe series transcends the stage to honor the Afro-Mexican population\, a facet often relegated to the sidelines in conversations about Mexico’s ethnic diversity. \nAfrican-influenced styles of Mexican music to be explored include son jarocho\, mariachi\, Chilenas\, and son de artesa. \nWe’re pleased to announce that the 79th Street Renaissance Festival has invited us back to present an abbreviated version of this program. DESCRIPTION:SCROLL DOWN FOR SPANISH DESCRIPTION \nAgeGuide and Sounds Good Choir are excited to announce the launch of a new\, engaging online singalong program for Spanish-speaking seniors in DuPage\, Grundy\, Kane\, Kankakee\, Kendall\, Lake\, McHenry\, Will and Cook Counties. Titled “¡Canta! Radio Recuerdos\,” this free membership club offers a unique opportunity for seniors over 60 to connect\, reminisce\, and enjoy the joy of singing from the comfort of their home. \nLed by the singer and guitarist Juan Díes\, co-founder of the two-time Grammy-nominated Sones de México Ensemble\, and hosted by program assistant Alfredo Hernández\, “¡Canta! Radio Recuerdos” invites eligible seniors to join in on the musical festivities via Zoom. This virtual singalong club is a celebration of Latin music classics from Mexico and other Latin American countries. \nRegular Singalong Club:\n• First and third Thursday of the month\n• 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM \nMemory Care Singalong:\n• Tailored for seniors with memory loss\n• Follows the regular singalong club\, starting at 12:00 PM\n• Caretakers are welcome to join \nAugust 15: The people from the seaport of Veracruz are known as “jarochos”\, their beautiful music as “son jarocho”\, and the fiestas where it’s played\, sung\, and danced to as “fandangos”. Today\, we dedicate this program to this genre\, a blend of music\, dance\, and poetry with European\, African\, and indigenous roots. We will sing “La Bamba”\, “El Balajú”\, “El Pájaro Carpintero”\, “El Torito”\, “La Bruja”\, “El Ahualulco”\, “El Colás” and other traditional songs. There’s a practice of call-and-response where the leader sings a verse\, sometimes cleverly improvised\, and others repeat it.
