A native from the Back of the Yards Neighborhood herself\, Erendira chose this event as an opportunity build a community through the arts in this neighborhood. \nThe program will include original music and selections from the Calentano region (hot lands in Michoacán)\, the Huasteca region (northern Veracruz\, southern part of San Luis Potosi and southern part of Tamaulipas)\, also selections from states Jalisco\, Yucatán\, Oaxaca and more. DESCRIPTION:Sones de México Ensemble joins the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago for a special evening celebrating Mexican culture\, music and dance. \nThe Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago was founded in 1982 by José Luis and Matie Ovalle\, its present artistic directors and choreographers. As Chicago’s oldest Mexican dance institution\, MFDC has received countless recognition and awards\, has performed for three presidents and represented Mexico in the 1994 USA World Cup opening ceremony. \nThe company has collaborated with Sones de México many times over the years\, including the Ensemble’s historic 20th Anniversary Concert in Chicago’s Millennium Park.

SUMMARY:7th Annual Day of the Immigrant Concert & Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sones de México Ensemble joins the 7th Annual Day of the Immigrant event sponsored by the Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project. The all-day event runs from 2 to 11PM. The band will perform an hour long concert beginning at 7PM. They will share the bill with the renowned Grupo Bryndis from Cerritos\, San Luis Potosi\, Mexico and the cumbia kings La Sonora Dinamita from Cartagena\, Colombia. \nEarlier in the day at 3PM\, Sones de México members Juan Díes and Erendira Izguerra will conduct a Danza de Viejitos Mask Making Workshop for families. Children will learn how to make a mask out of paper while they learn about the traditions of the P’urhépecha people of Michoacan. At the conclusion\, children will learn the dance of “old people” (viejitos)\, where they can wear their masks. \nThis family friendly event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Sones de México Ensemble visits the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Lake County for a pair of performances. \nWe’ll present a full two-set concert performance beginning at 8pm in the Studio Theater. Tickets are required. \nEarlier that evening we’ll present our FREE lecture/demo program “Beyond the Music\, A Musical Geography of Mexico” at 6:30pm in the Center’s Black Box Theater. “Beyond the Music” is a lecture/demo that involves all the members of Sones de Mexico Ensemble with many of their musical instruments. DESCRIPTION:Sones de México Ensemble celebrates Mexican Independence Day with a concert at the famous Diego Rivera Court at the Detroit Institute of the Arts. \nThe Detroit Industry fresco cycle was conceived by Mexican muralist Diego Rivera as a tribute to the city’s manufacturing base and labor force of the 1930s. Rivera completed the twenty-seven panel work in eleven months\, from April 1932 to March 1933. It is considered the finest example of Mexican mural art in the United States\, and the artist thought it the best work of his career. \n“Beyond the Music: A Musical Geography of Mexico” is a guided tour through Mexico’s folk music regions by our lively and informative multimedia performance presentation. DESCRIPTION:A rare total solar eclipse will pass directly over Carbondale\, IL on the afternoon of August 21\, so Sones de Mexico Ensemble is heading to the path of totality to present Beyond the Music: A Musical Geography of Mexico  outdoors at Lemus Turley Park\, 109 N Glenview in Carbondale. \nThe total eclipse occurs at exactly 1:21PM. There will be music both before and after\, starting with Zenen Zeferino from Veracruz\, Mexico with the Encuentro de Jaraneros of the Midwest. After a break to view the eclipse\, Sones de México will perform beginning at 2PM. \nIn addition to Beyond the Music\, Sones de México will perform rarely heard selections from their 2013 concept album 13 B’ak’tun\, a song cycle that revolved around the turning of the Mayan calendar. \nCan’t make it to Carbondale? SUMMARY:Navy Pier Group Quinceañera Concert
DESCRIPTION:Navy Pier is celebrating the quinceañeras of young ladies throughout the Chicagoland area with free professional group photos on the 15th of July. Navy Pier has teamed up with the National Museum of Mexican Art to host a photo shoot for 15-year-old birthday girls on the base of the Pier’s Wave Wall staircase on the South Dock against the backdrop of the Centennial Wheel. Local young ladies are invited to gather at the Pier in their finest quinceañera dresses for a “class photo” along the lakefront with others celebrating the special milestone. \nSones de México Ensemble will celebrate along with them by performing a concert at 2:30 (after the photo shoot) on the brand new Polk Bros. Performance Lawn Stage at the entrance to the pier. \nA popular Latin American tradition\, quinceañera is a celebration of a girl’s coming of age\, marking the transition from childhood to young adulthood in the Latin American culture.
