DESCRIPTION:Sones de México Ensemble brings Fiesta Mexicana to iFest Bolingbrook: International Festival of Cultures\, a one-day event celebrating cultures from all over the world. \nFiesta Mexicana is a 45-minute interactive concert for kids and their parents based on our Parent’s Choice Award Winning album of the same name. \nWe’ll embark on a journey through Mexican music and the magic world that surrounds it. Children begin by learning about the four sacred elements of nature for the Aztecs: Earth\, Wind\, Fire\, and Water. Then they learn songs about different animals that inhabit the Mexican ecosystem\, including the acamaya (a crawfish)\, the crocodile\, the legendary mermaid\, a mouse\, a buzzard\, a duck\, and even a cat! Kids will clap Mexican rhythms and learn the difference between a slow and a fast tempo with the help of Doña Sabina\, a 100-year-old special guest. SUMMARY:Fiesta Mexicana Family Concert
DESCRIPTION:Fiesta Mexicana is a 45-minute interactive concert for kids and their parents based on an album of the same name. It involves all the musicians of Sones de México Ensemble. The program includes seven or eight songs and a fair amount of storytelling and interactive games between the songs that can be delivered in English or in Spanish. \nThe group embarks on a journey through Mexican music and the magic world that surrounds it. Children begin by learning about the four sacred elements of nature for the Aztecs: Earth\, Wind\, Fire\, and Water. Then they learn songs about different animals that inhabit the Mexican ecosystem\, including the acamaya (a crawfish)\, the crocodile\, the legendary mermaid\, a mouse\, a buzzard\, a duck\, and even a cat! Kids will clap Mexican rhythms and learn the difference between a slow and a fast tempo with the help of Doña Sabina\, a 100-year-old special guest. First and foremost\, everyone in the audience will learn how fun it is to play and dance Mexican music. \nThis event is free and no tickets are required.

DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Music Foodways Edition: A Music and Culinary Geography of Mexico is a lively lecture/demo presentation that combines music and cuisine with a multi-media cultural history of Mexican regions to better understand the origins of the various musical styles and regional cuisines as well as their significance to the diverse peoples that make up Mexico. \nJoin two-time GRAMMY nominated Sones de México Ensemble and award-winning chef Dudley Nieto on a journey to explore Mexico’s geography through a musical and culinary experience. \nThis series is free and open to the public and is presented in collaboration with local organizations throughout the U.S. following Sones de México Ensmeble’s touring schedule. The program will be presented in the Reid Center’s Entertainment Hall. \nBeyond the Music Foodways Edition: A Music and Culinary Geography of Mexico is sponsored in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Arts in the Park: Fiesta Mexicana and Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Sones de México Ensemble travels to southern Illinois to present our Fiesta Mexicana family concert and a series of workshop activities at Art in the Park. \n1:30 PM – Workshops \nAztec Ceremonial La Danza de Sol\nAfromexican Mimetic Dance/Zapateado\nDanza de Viejitos Mask-Mak \n2:30 PM – Fiesta Mexicana \nFiesta Mexicana is a 45-minute interactive concert for kids and their parents based on our Parent’s Choice Award-winning album “Fiesta Mexicana: Mexican Songs & Stories for Niños & Niñas and their Papás & Mamás.” The program includes songs\, storytelling\, and interactive games delivered in English and Spanish. \nEmbark on a journey through Mexican music and the magic world that surrounds it. Children will learn about the four sacred elements of nature for the Aztecs: Earth\, Wind\, Fire\, and Water. Then they learn songs about different animals that inhabit the Mexican ecosystem\, including the acamaya (a crawfish)\, the crocodile\, the legendary mermaid\, a mouse\, a buzzard\, a duck\, and even a cat! Clap to Mexican rhythms and learn the difference between a slow and a fast tempo with the help of Doña Sabina\, our 100-year-old special guest. \nFirst and foremost\, everyone in the audience will learn how fun it is to play and dance Mexican music. \nOther activities include the SIU Ballet Folklorico “Dos Fronteras” and Latin Dance with the Salsa Night Dancers. \nArt in the Park is free and open to the public. \nThe celebration is presented by SI CABE: Southern Illinois Culture and Arts in Bilingual Education and Salsa Dance Night and is generously supported by an Illinois Arts Council Agency Artstour & Live Music grant\, the Illinois Humanities Foreground Rural Initiative\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, Alto Vineyards\, El Paisano Restaurant\, with help from numerous community (CMS Beta Club) and SIU student volunteers.

In the 1930s\, mariachi music became urbanized and spread nationally through radio and globally during the golden age of Mexican cinema. This turned it into the principal vehicle for accompanying solo ranchera music singers\, such as Pedro Infante\, Jorge Negrete\, Lola Beltrán\, Antonio Aguilar\, Cuco Sánchez\, Lucha Villa\, Vicente Fernández\, and Juan Gabriel. Among the most distinguished mariachis are the Cuarteto Coculense\, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán\, and Mariachi Los Camperos. With her profound experience in merging art and education\, especially in Chicago’s museums and public schools\, she brings a wealth of knowledge to the roundtable. \nand \nElena Gonzales\, PhD\, an accomplished curator and author specializing in exhibitions that promote social justice and cultural awareness\, and Curator of Civic Engagement & Social Justice at the Chicago History Museum. With a strong background in American Studies and Public Humanities\, Dr. Gonzales has been curating since 2006\, beginning at the National Museum of Mexican Art. \nDr. Eric Hines is a distinguished percussionist and educator based in Chicago. He has been the drummer in Sones de Mexico Ensemble since 2015. With a versatile mastery of classical\, jazz\, Caribbean\, Brazilian\, Mexican\, and popular percussion\, Eric is not only a renowned performer but also a bandleader\, leading the captivating Caribbean jazz ensemble\, Eric Hines & Pan Dulce\, a staple in the vibrant Chicago music scene. Beyond performing\, Eric is a sought-after clinician in concert\, marching\, and world percussion\, sharing his knowledge at prestigious events and institutions globally. \nIn Chicago\, Eric is a dedicated faculty member of Ravinia’s Jazz Mentors program and The People’s Music School\, where he directs Wind Ensemble\, teaches Applied Percussion\, and imparts Music Theory.
